Located west of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the famous Shenandoah Valley, Clarke County's history goes back to when Native Americans inhabited the area before Europeans settled there in the 1700's. It was established officially in 1836, breaking off from Frederick County. The rich heritage of the county includes many Civil War milestones and more than 15 official historical landmarks and buildings. There are two incorporated towns within Clarke County; Boyce and Berryville (the county seat).
Clarke County's family oriented values make life delightfully different. There are opportunities for community involvement and a wide variety of cultural enrichment events. The Clarke County school system is award winning and provides excellent educational opportunities. In addition to the rolling hills and wide open spaces, the Clarke County Parks and Recreation department manages a 107 acre park that houses an outdoor swimming pool, lighted outdoor tennis courts, 6 ball fields, 4 soccer fields, a Recreation Center, 4 picnic shelters and a fitness trail, providing a centralized community events center.
